Atlanta, GA | Illustration & Painting
Sarah Nathaniel (BA, MFA) is a working artist, arts instructor, and arts administrator in her hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. Her work investigates the behavior and operation of line within predetermined rules and as a function of simple meditations. Within this work, Nathaniel critically examines how line can be used to disrupt and resist dominant norms and discourses, which are often regimented by oppressive rules that serve to artificially constrain artistic expression. Her work ranges in medium from drawing and painting to minimalist installations constructed using found objects. Nathaniel’s work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the Southeast region of the United States and internationally in southern France. Nathaniel’s formal education includes a BA in painting from Guilford College and an MFA in painting from Savannah College of Art and Design.

Meditation is an act of control implemented to provide clarity of thought. Line is a minimal and basic form. Making lines within the predetermined rules of a simple meditation eliminates clutter offers freedom within the mind. The subjects work with line and repetition, emphasizing medium and material within painting and object. Self-imposed rules and boundaries are applied in-process to concentrate the focus of the work on the importance of simplification and structure, and to further investigate the contextual significance of the objects and materials that are used.
