Chaos and control are polar human experiences. Neither evoke a positive state, yet we find ourselves straddling between the two as we attempt to grasp that which is elusive, thereby creating anxiety. We can, however, escape our mental constraints by succumbing to the universe’s will. This internalized struggle and realization led me to seek Eastern philosophies as an outlet to higher truth. Buddhist Monk, Thich Nhat Hanh teaches, “Our suffering has the capacity of showing us the path to liberation. Embrace your suffering and let it reveal to you the way to peace.” Our polarities lead to suffering, but if we use pain to mend and grow, we become more beautiful beings.
I embrace this doctrine as I make art, ultimately finding clarity by intuitively making work. I find that the most intimidating experience is how people become so prominent in your life – a fixture – but also how quickly they can leave; everything comes and goes fluidly like waves. We are controlled like the tide, the moon pushing us back and forth out to sea. That is where the people I have loved go. They are out at sea. Floating away, only for a certain tide to bring them back.
