“I go out every day with the intention of breaking visual rules and creating evocative, cinematic images that inspire.” - Michael Grecco
Michael Grecco is an award-winning and internationally acclaimed photographer of celebrity portraits, advertising and editorial commissions, private collections, and fine art.
One of the most respected and sought after visual storytellers in the world, his artistic conceptual vision and signature dramatic lighting create distinctive images that are famously dramatic, evocative, sophisticated, ironic, and comedic.
A Hasselblad Master and Panasonic Lumix Luminary, Grecco is a regular expert and celebrated speaker on creativity, photography, and his signature lighting and directorial techniques worldwide. His provocative documentary movie and accompanying book Naked Ambition has earned critical acclaim. His award winning still images are published the world over in magazines such as Esquire, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone and Time. He is the author of the best-selling photographer’s guidebook: Lighting and the Dramatic Portrait: The Art of Celebrity and Editorial Photography. Grecco has also been profiled extensively in key photographic trade journals.
Having been dubbed "A Master of Light” by his peers, Grecco wholeheartedly admits his fascination with light and its effect in each and every photograph he takes. “Light is something I have studied, played with, and have been captivated by for decades. I find magic in its qualities. I have an immense passion for ‘molding’ light in order to create the shot that immortalizes a moment and induces an emotion. A reaction.”
“It's not the awards or accolades I'm ever after. It's the impact - on a society, on a community, on a career, on a person. I love our photo industry. I love the way we see things, what we capture and the potential impact a photograph has on culture, a generation, to a point of time in history.”
Grecco is based in Los Angeles. In his rare spare time, he can be found hanging with his three fantastic children, friends and fellow photographers, collaborating with others, or exploring his hometown subcultures on his vintage Triumph motorcycle.

“Daylight is too easy. What I want is difficult – the atmosphere of lamps and moonlight.” - Edgar Degas
Michael Grecco’s night is full of light. He is a moonwalker, a somnambulist whose conscious and unconscious are not blinded by the brights of oncoming traffic or swallowed into shadows. He is enthralled by the radiance within the blackness, the rapture of color.
Grecco’s “Urban Landscapes” are vivid panoramic photographs shot in mostly unidentifiable locations around the world. These places seem alien and exotic, showered in vibrant, lucent, sometimes iridescent almost radioactive colors, revealed in raking rays, squiggles, planes, and circles. Through long exposure, selective focus, shallow depth of field, blurring and wide framing, he finds his way in the dark and leads us as he dances ecstatically through the color spectrum.
In the studio and on location, he is a virtuoso of lighting technique. That skill has obviously sharpened his eye and instincts in locating these chromatic landscapes as he travels the city after dark. Further all of what happens is “in camera”, in his panoramic Hasselblad.
He is the magic.
Sixty years ago, the legendary photographer Ernst Haas made this journey. Haas was interested in “transforming an object from what it is to what you want it to be.”
Grecco wants to “to contextualize man and his/her place in their environments they create, in the artifices they live in, to go out every day with the intention of breaking visual rules, to create an evocative, cinematic image that inspires - in its format, composition and color”
This is the visual music of the night.
